Upper Secondary Online Learning
Structured GCSE and IGCSE online learning for students aged 14–16. Live subject teaching, exam-focused preparation, revision planning and private candidate guidance across Mathematics, English, Science and Languages.
ON22 Academy is a virtual academy and online education provider offering structured Upper Secondary online learning for students aged 14–16 preparing for GCSE and IGCSE subjects. This pathway supports academic preparation through live online lessons, guided revision, feedback and exam-focused teaching in Mathematics, English, Science, French and Spanish.
ON22 is not a registered school or exam centre. Where students enter external examinations, parents and guardians register directly with approved centres, exam boards, British Council centres, schools or authorised providers as private candidates where available.
GCSE and IGCSE Preparation Needs More Than Content
Upper Secondary is the stage where families usually become more serious about outcomes. Subjects become part of a qualification route that can affect Post-16 choices, university planning and future opportunities.
At this stage, students need more than a teacher explaining topics. They need:
- Subject structure and exam-board awareness
- Revision habits and timed practice
- Feedback on mistakes
- Realistic planning around exam entry
- Coherent preparation, not fragmented support
ON22 Academy supports the academic preparation side of this journey. Parents remain responsible for confirming and completing exam registration directly with approved centres.
Who the Upper Secondary Pathway Is For
This pathway is designed for students aged 14–16. Some need a full Upper Secondary pathway. Others need targeted support in one subject.
GCSE & IGCSE Students
Students aged 14–16 preparing for GCSE or IGCSE subjects who need structured British Curriculum support.
Home-Educated Learners
Home-educated students working towards external qualifications who need subject teaching and exam preparation guidance.
International Students
International families following British Curriculum examination routes who need online teaching across time zones.
Students Needing Stronger Foundations
Learners who need stronger teaching in Maths, English or Science before exam work becomes the focus.
Combined vs Separate Sciences
Students and families deciding between Combined Science and separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics routes.
Moving from Lower Secondary
Students transitioning from Lower Secondary foundations into formal qualification preparation for the first time.
The Main Challenge at Ages 14–16
The biggest challenge at Upper Secondary level is that there are several moving parts at once. Students need to learn the subject content. They also need to understand how questions are asked, how marks are awarded and how to manage time under exam conditions.
Families may also need to think about exam boards, centres, registration deadlines, predicted grades, private candidate rules and future Post-16 choices. This is why GCSE and IGCSE preparation should not be left until the final months.
Students often struggle not because they are incapable, but because preparation has become fragmented. A strong Upper Secondary pathway brings the work together.
GCSE and IGCSE Subjects Supported
ON22 Academy can support students across core and selected Upper Secondary subjects.
GCSE & IGCSE Mathematics
Mathematics at GCSE and IGCSE requires accuracy, reasoning and regular practice. Students may need Foundation or Higher tier support depending on their route.
- Number, Algebra, Ratio & Proportion
- Geometry, Trigonometry & Graphs
- Statistics, Probability & Reasoning
- Calculator & non-calculator methods
- Exam technique & multi-step problem solving
GCSE & IGCSE English Language
English Language preparation is about reading, writing and communication under pressure. Strong preparation helps students become more deliberate readers and more controlled writers.
- Reading comprehension, inference & analysis
- Creative & transactional writing
- Planning responses & evidence-based answers
- Vocabulary, sentence control & timed practice
GCSE & IGCSE English Literature
English Literature requires understanding texts, themes, characters, context and writer methods. Students learn to respond to the question being asked, not to memorise paragraphs blindly.
- Poetry, Shakespeare, drama & prose
- Themes, character & context
- Essay structure & quotation use
- Comparative writing & literary terminology
GCSE & IGCSE Combined Science
Combined Science gives students a broad route through Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It should not be seen as an easy option — students must manage three disciplines and apply knowledge to unfamiliar questions.
- Cell biology, organisation & body systems
- Atomic structure, bonding & chemical reactions
- Forces, electricity, waves & energy
- Scientific calculations & required practical knowledge
GCSE & IGCSE Separate Sciences
Separate Biology, Chemistry and Physics may suit students with strong science interest, STEM plans or Post-16 ambitions in Medicine, Engineering, Pharmacy or scientific research.
- GCSE & IGCSE Biology
- GCSE & IGCSE Chemistry
- GCSE & IGCSE Physics
- Families should check exam board and centre requirements carefully
GCSE & IGCSE French & Spanish
Modern foreign language preparation requires regular listening, speaking, reading and writing practice. Students cannot build confidence in a language by revising only near the exam.
- Vocabulary, grammar & translation
- Listening & reading comprehension
- Speaking practice & role-play tasks
- Writing accuracy, opinions & exam technique
GCSE or IGCSE: What Families Should Understand
GCSE and IGCSE routes can both be suitable, but they are not the same in every subject, country or centre. Families should confirm which route is available before committing to preparation.
Which Qualification Is Available
Check which qualification is available at local centres and whether it is accepted for future Post-16 or university plans.
Private Candidate Acceptance
Confirm whether the chosen centre accepts private candidates for the specific subject and exam board.
Practical and Coursework Components
Check whether there are practical, speaking or coursework components that require additional arrangements.
Post-16 and University Fit
Consider how the qualification fits with A Level, IB-style or international progression routes.
Relevant exam boards: Pearson Edexcel, AQA, OCR, Cambridge International, OxfordAQA — depending on subject and centre.
ON22 Academy can support academic preparation and guidance. Parents and guardians must confirm exam entry directly with approved providers.
Exam Boards and Private Candidate Planning
Families should not leave exam board and centre decisions too late. ON22 Academy does not control centre availability and cannot guarantee exam places. Our role is to support academic preparation and help families understand the planning questions they need to ask.
Check Exam Board Availability
A student might study the right subject but prepare for the wrong specification. Confirm Pearson Edexcel, AQA, OCR, Cambridge International or OxfordAQA availability early.
Entry Deadlines
Private candidate entry deadlines vary by board and centre. Missing a deadline can mean waiting another year.
Speaking and Practical Arrangements
Some subjects require speaking assessments or practical components that are not always available to private candidates. Check early.
British Council and International Centres
British Council centres may be available in some countries but coverage varies by subject, board and year.
Fees and Late Entry Charges
Confirm fee structures, identification requirements and late entry charges with the centre directly before registering.
Access Arrangements
Families needing access arrangements such as extra time must confirm these with the exam centre well in advance.
How ON22 Supports Upper Secondary Students
Live, structured support from initial teaching through to exam-ready confidence.
Subject Teaching
Structured teaching in the subject areas the student is studying, delivered live and interactively online.
Specification-Aware Preparation
Lessons aligned to the relevant GCSE or IGCSE route where the exam board and specification are known.
Revision Planning
Helping students organise topics, practise regularly and avoid last-minute panic before assessments.
Exam Technique
Practising interpreting questions, structuring answers and managing time under timed conditions.
Mock Assessment and Feedback
Timed practice to identify gaps, review errors and build genuine exam confidence.
Parent Communication
Feedback to parents so they understand progress, effort and areas needing attention between sessions.
Our Experience Supporting Families
In our experience, Upper Secondary families usually need two kinds of support: academic teaching and practical planning.
What families expect:
- Help with Maths, English, Science or languages
- Clear subject teaching and feedback
- Regular lesson progress
What often surprises families:
- Exam centre planning must begin early
- Not every centre offers every subject or board
- Independent revision between lessons is essential
Students who make the best progress usually have a weekly routine, regular attendance, honest feedback and parents who act early when something slips.
Upper Secondary for Home-Educating Families
For home-educating families, Upper Secondary is the point where education planning becomes more formal. Parents may need to decide:
- Which GCSE or IGCSE subjects the student will take
- Whether Maths should be Foundation or Higher tier
- Whether Science should be Combined or separate
- Which exam board is realistic
- Which centres accept private candidates
- Whether coursework or speaking components apply
- How much weekly study time is needed
ON22 can provide subject teaching and academic guidance. Parents remain responsible for home education, local authority, safeguarding, legal and examination requirements.
Upper Secondary for International Families
International families may use ON22 Academy to prepare for GCSE or IGCSE subjects while living outside the UK. This can support students who:
- Want British Curriculum examination preparation
- Are moving between education systems
- Are preparing for UK sixth form or international school routes
- Need English-medium subject teaching across time zones
- Want a pathway towards A Levels or university study
Families should check local centre availability carefully. British Council centres and Cambridge International providers may be available in some regions but this varies by country and subject.
Preparing for Post-16 Study
Upper Secondary choices affect Post-16 options. It is better to understand those expectations before final GCSE or IGCSE choices are made.
Mathematics Grades
Strong Mathematics grades open more Post-16 routes. Students considering A Level Maths, Engineering or Sciences need to plan carefully.
English Language Requirements
Many Post-16 providers, UCAS routes and universities have minimum English Language grade requirements.
Science Subject Choices
Students planning Medicine, Engineering, Veterinary Science or Pharmacy routes should understand which science subjects and grades they will need.
A Level Readiness
GCSE and IGCSE results feed directly into A Level subject choices. The right combination matters more than taking the most subjects.
What Parents Can Do During Upper Secondary
Parents do not need to teach every subject, but they do need to help maintain structure. At ages 14–16, students need to become more independent, but they are not usually ready to manage everything alone.
- Checking lesson attendance
- Protecting regular study time
- Asking for teacher feedback
- Monitoring revision habits
- Starting exam centre research early
- Keeping track of deadlines
- Checking exam board requirements
- Encouraging timed practice
- Helping students avoid last-minute revision panic
- Responding quickly when effort or confidence drops

Start with an Upper Secondary Consultation
A consultation helps us understand the student’s current level, subject needs and examination plans before recommending support. If the pathway is suitable, we will explain the next steps clearly.
We will discuss:
- The student’s age and current education
- GCSE or IGCSE subjects being considered
- Current strengths and gaps
- Exam board or specification if known
- Whether the student is in school, home educated or international
And also:
- Whether private candidate entry may be needed
